I love feeling empowered! Having my children gave me a new sense of my power and my abilities. The support given to me from my husband, family, friends and doulas helped me have labor experiences I would be happy to repeat. My goal as a doula is to support mother and family in the choices they have made for their labor day. Uplifting a woman’s own strength and needs at a time when she can be most venerable or unsure is my goal.

Hi, I'm Lauren. I was raised in Northern Virginia, studied in Florida, and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Theology. This is where I met my husband, who was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. After a long distance engagement, I moved my life to South Africa and was married. During my time overseas I learned how to be a part of a community, how to be both supportive and supported. Just four years later, I gave birth to my first son, Sterling, with my husband and doula by my side. This was a monumental moment in my life, where I learned just how powerful I truly am, and how my body is beautifully made. It also birthed in me the woman that I am today, that is, powerful, adaptive, beautiful and fearless. As I began feeling empowered as a women and mother, I soon developed deep passions to see other women channeling their truest form of themselves, in and during labor. It's through birth that expelled my biggest fears and brought to light who I am and what I was always made to do: support women in their pilgrimage into motherhood. I trained with DONA International and became a birth doula.
I have much love and respect for women of all cultures, ethnicities and religions. I understand that the birth of your child(ren) is a sacred moment in your life. Your experience matters. The people who surround and support you throughout labor are hand picked. As your doula, I feel honored to be invited into your birth space. I offer you an open heart to receive and empower your desired birth. My hands embrace, care for, and tend to you with compassion. I will be your constant companion.
I absolutely love the city of Charlotte and the doulas that I serve alongside. I often say, "We are better together," feeling that a collaborative effort takes you further and keeps you stronger. My backup doulas are insanely talented and passionate individuals. When working together, we are called 'The Dream Team.' Let’s meet up and see if we would be a good fit for each other.

Short bio: When I was pregnant with my first child, I knew I wanted a natural childbirth. It was the most beautiful, life altering experience I could have imagined. I was hooked! Those endorphins did their job; I absolutely LOVED the whole process of labor and birth! I loved it so much I have done it four more times since then! My Bradley teacher (who was also my labor doula) became my mentor. I began my journey as a doula and childbirth educator in the fall of 2006. Since then I have been blessed to witness many couples become families and families grow larger. I am always honored to be asked to be a part of the birth team, whether as a childbirth educator or as a doula. When I teach my childbirth class, my goal is to empower families to make choices in their pregnancy and birth that represent what they want, need, and believe for their birth. Of course that is going to look very different for everyone. As a doula I strive to be a source of information during the pregnancy and physical, mental, and emotional support during the labor and birth.

Areas/hospitals serve: I serve Home Births, Birth Centers, and hospitals in of the Greater Charlotte area including Rock Hill, Huntersville, and Concord.
bio: My first birth was difficult and traumatic, but having the support of a doula made a life changing difference for me. In those postpartum months afterwards I began researching all things birth and listening to the stories of other mothers. This not only helped heal the birth trauma I had experienced, it enabled me to realize a passion that was buried deep within me. In talking to mothers I noticed a recurring theme of their births being this rite of passage, a pivotal point in their journey that seemed to really set the tone in their mothering experiences. What was even more interesting is how each mother seemed to remember every detail of their births…what was said, what was done to them, and how they were treated. In reflecting on my own birth, I came to realize that the doula support I received was crucial and truly enabled me to still be fully supported even in a birth that was less than ideal. It became clear to me that I needed to channel my passion for empowering birthing women through doula work. In 2010 I trained with DONA and began attending births shortly thereafter. My next three children were born peacefully at home. Their births were incredibly healing and such beautiful spiritual transformations. My hope is that every woman in my care experiences the same love and support that I felt during these labors. I believe with all of my heart that our bodies work and birth works. We were made to grow, birth, and feed our babies. Birth is a normal and natural process, not a pathological problem to be solved. Bringing forth life is a beautiful and transformative rite of passage, as well as a life changing experience that women will carry with them for their entire lives. Every mother needs non-judgmental support and to feel safe and empowered. I will support you in your choices and work hard to hold space for you during your pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum.

Name: Kira Figg
Bio: My name is Kira Figg, loving wife & mother. My passion for birth work started with the birth of my daughter in 2016. I was fortunate to have a wonderful doula along with the support of my husband for my daughter’s birth. It was the most rewarding hard work I’ve ever done. I truly believe every mother deserves a doula by her and her partners side. The wisdom, encouragement, and constant support of a doula was invaluable to both of us.
My background for the last 11 years was serving the needs of patients working at Charlotte Radiology in all capacities at the breast centers, imaging centers, and in the interventional radiology department. My experience there serves me well with helping with the delicate needs of families. I am a native to the Charlotte area and love it so much I plan to raise my children here.
As a doula, I empower mothers and their partners through education and emotional & physical support to have their best birth, whatever their choices may be. This is your story to tell and I’m here to attend you on your journey, one that will never be forgotten. I will support you prenatally, during labor & delivery, and postpartum.

Wife, Mother, Mentor
I began promoting natural birthing after enduring a crisis while giving birth to my second child in 2001. Simply put, it was an induction gone wrong. This lead to an emergency cesarean, that lead to my baby and I both being placed in ICU for nearly a week. I also went through severe postpartum depression during the first two months. By the third month, I discovered that I was pregnant again.
With a whirlwind of emotions inside of me, I knew things had to be done differently in this pregnancy. So I decided to have a natural VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). But that decision wasn't an easy journey. My obstetrician did not recommend a vaginal birth due to the fact that my pregnancy was too close to my previous delivery, which ended with a cesarean, so there were risks associated with it. However, after months of research, I decided to pressed through with my decision.
In September of 2002, I gave birth to a healthy 7 lbs 6 oz baby, and all naturally! It was, and still is, one of the best and most fulfilling decisions of my life.
Throughout the years I have shared my story with many women and mothers-to-be. I have served as a doula in many births, whether it be at a hospital, birthing center, or at home. My ten-year background in the medical field has allowed me to educate women on healthy lifestyle choices before and after birth. I have also volunteered my time, love, and support for those whose unexpected pregnancies brought crisis into their lives.
Genesis Birthing promotes and supports natural birthing, VBACs (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean), home births, and breastfeeding. We also support plus-size pregnancy, families who chose not to vaccinate their children, and lend a effective support system for those who have suddenly lost their baby due to unforeseen circumstances (still-births, miscarriage, SIDs, etc).
I look forward to taking this journey with you.

Labor & Delivery Doula
Charlotte Metro Area (including Fort Mill & Rock Hill, SC)
I am a wife and mother of three with over 10 years of experience in educating and supporting mothers in breastfeeding, childbirth, and nutrition. I am a La Leche League Leader, ToLabor Professional Trained Doula, and Birth Photographer.
Although my husband and I prepared for childbirth through Bradley Method Childbirth classes and a significant amount of reading, our first two children were born by cesarean section. With a knowledgeable and supportive care provider and doula for my third birth, I was able to have a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). Choosing a birth location that supports your needs and desires as well as a knowledgeable and supportive primary care provider is one of the most important decisions you can make that will affect the choices that you have in labor and the outcome of your birth.
My own experiences and struggles have given me a passion to help other mothers create the best opportunity for a successful natural childbirth. It is my goal to help each couple understand their options and choices, to create a loving and supportive environment where both parents feel that their desires are being heard and respected, and provide encouragement and evidence-based information along the way.

Having a baby is no small feat! It is a monumental experience in a woman’s life that will forever change her. The process is filled with many emotions and physical changes. It is a powerful, profound experience and change that every woman will experience in her own unique way. A doula’s role is to support a woman on her special journey. The doula empowers her, guides her through all the information and choices regarding pregnancy, birth and motherhood. The doula honors the woman’s wishes and decisions and helps her create a vision for herself, her baby and her family. The doula is there for her and her partner, walking the path alongside them with honest, caring and non judgmental support of their choices. The doula knows that every woman has what it takes to birth her baby and become the mother she is meant to be.
BIO: Hi, I’m Cady! It is my passion and purpose to serve women as a birth and postpartum doula. This passion was kindled for me when I became a mother to my own children, and has grown over the years while remaining active in different aspects of birth and prenatal care. My own birth experiences were as unique as my children themselves. One baby born in the middle of the night at a hospital during a huge snowstorm and one at my home on a calm and sunny morning. Both of these births were benefited by my skills as a student of yoga. I have been practicing yoga for many years and became certified to teach in 2002 and in 2003 trained and certified in prenatal and postpartum yoga. My personal practice helps me to flow through the challenges and ups and downs that life presents. It helps me to stayed focused on what is most important. I have a deeper awareness of my self, a stronger connection and knowing of my mind, body and spirit because of yoga. I have been told by many that my presence is calming, grounding and peaceful. I am a loving wife, happy mama to two crazy, awesome, fun boys and a few sweet, furry creatures. My spirit has always been filled with the call of the journey and a bit of wanderlust. Because of that I’ve lived in many places, but have called Charlotte, NC home since 2010. I support families of all kinds, shapes, sizes and circumstances and all types of births including hospital, home, birth center, natural, medicated, VBAC or surgical. I would love to hear from you! Name: Debbie Conklin
My name is Debbie, mom to 5 adult children, and 5 grandbabies. The first birth I attended, other than my own, was for one of my grandchildren. Knowing that I was doing the work of a doula, solidified my life long calling. It was then that I decided to get certified as a labor doula. What a wonderful journey it has been.
It is my great honor to be welcomed into the sacred place of expectant families as they bring their precious babies earth side! I am by nature nurturing and compassionate. It is my belief that every woman should have the continual, non-judgemental support of a doula. I feel strongly that as a doula, it is my responsibility to stay current on evidence based research and continuing education. I remind all my clients that "this is your birth!" It doesn't matter if it is a hospital, birth center, or homebirth, first or tenth baby, belly birth or vaginal, completely unmedicated, epidural, or somewhere in between. There is no correct way to give birth. Each birth is unique, and my support is tailored accordingly. My goal is that no matter how a woman chooses to give birth, she does so feeling respected, supported, informed, and confident.

Name: Sabrina Lewis
Facebook/Instagram/Twitter: QCity Doula
My name is Sabrina Lewis, I am a married mother of four and live in Harrisburg, NC. I became a doula because I have been through several difficult situations in childbirth: Pre-term labor with four separate pregnancies, C-Sections, VBACs, and delivered two babies that have passed away in my second trimester. Through my experiences, I wished that I had someone with me who could answer questions and bring me more emotional and physical comfort. When I learned what a doula was, I instantly wanted to become one. I have a passion for assisting women in having the best experience possible through an empowering and hard situation. I am a certified birth doula through the International Doula Institute and have been attending births in the Charlotte area for over four years. I witnessed my first birth thirteen years ago and have never looked back.
I am a firm believer that the mother, her support persons, medical staff, and doula are a team. It is the doula’s job to provide emotional support to the mother, her partner (if she has one), and support persons, help with the physical comfort throughout the labor, while also having a working knowledge of the birth process and common practices. She uses her knowledge and experience to help the mother have a positive outlook on the process and have confidence in themselves and what they are capable of. It is also their responsibility to work in a positive manner with the medical staff, (doctor’s, midwives, and nurses) so that all have the best possible attitude and outlook for the delivery. I am knowledgeable in several birth methods including: Bradley method, HypnoBirthing and Kopa Birth. I have experience as a doula with birth centers, hospital deliveries, home births (attended by midwives), natural births, epidurals, VBACs, multiples, preterm birth, c-sections, and stillborn delivery.

Bio: My family and I have been in the Huntersville area since 2011, and we love it here. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Bryan for almost 30 years, and I am a mom of 8 children ranging in ages from 12-28, 4 boys and 4 girls. I have personally experienced 6 hospital births, including a twin birth with my last two, 3 of these births were unmedicated, and 1 amazing homebirth with my 6th.
I have always been passionate about LIFE, God-given life! I believe each child is a gift from God created uniquely and miraculously with a divine purpose. Amazingly, up until this past summer I had never heard about doulas, who they are or what they did. That all changed when I was talking to a young friend whom I had supported during her labor, she was 18 at the time of the birth, and she told me what a difference I had made in her birth experience, and if she had any more babies, I had to promise to be there. Of course, I promised. We had this conversation as her son turned 6 this past August.
I started thinking about what a privilege it was to support her, and it stirred something in me. I began researching about midwives and other birthing careers and came across doulas. I couldn’t believe that something I was so passionate about could be a career. I pursued different training options and began my journey of becoming a Labor Doula and Childbirth Educator. As I told my sister, now that I’m almost 50, I know what I want to be when I grow up!
I may be new to the “Doula Scene,” but not the “Birthing Scene.” I believe my personal experience as well as my training has more than prepared me for this incredible opportunity to serve you as a Labor Doula. My desire is to support, encourage, educate, empower, prepare and pray for women and their partners during this amazing journey of pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood.
I am also an artist who loves to “Speak Life” through my art. I understand the power of words and how they change your attitude, expectations and outlook on life. Pregnancy and Labor Affirmation Art was the perfect combination of all my passions.
I would be honored to come along side of you as your Labor Doula and/or Childbirth Educator to help prepare, educate and empower you to have a positive and meaningful birth experience as you welcome your precious gift from God into the world.
Description of services offered: Labor Doula, Childbirth Educator and Pregnancy and Labor Affirmation Art

Trainings/ Certifications: I am currently in the certification process for both Labor Doula and Childbirth Educator through CAPPA
Name: Abby Corbett
Short bio: Hi, I’m Abby Corbett – a birth doula, educator, wife, and mother (to 3 little ones). My passion is in educating and inspiring others. Prior to becoming a doula, I worked for a few years teaching high school, tutoring, coaching girls’ soccer, and as an editor. I’ve lived in North Carolina for almost 7 years now, but I grew up in Virginia. There is truth behind the phrase “Virginia is for lovers” because that is where I met and married my husband (Logan) in 2009. Fast forward a few years later, I became pregnant with our first child and dived right into the birth community – taking childbirth education classes, touring hospitals/birth centers, researching baby gear, creating a birth vision, and finding a supportive birth team. I gave birth to my son in 2011 with the unwavering support of my labor coach (my husband) and a trained, compassionate midwife by my side. The experience changed my life – it was sacred and beautiful! It allowed me to bear witness to the strength of my mind and body to birth a baby AND to witness the invaluable strength of having continuous support in a birth space. I have since birthed two more babies (girls!) into the family, born in 2013 and 2016. After my youngest was born, a spark ignited inside of me and it shined forth when I finally realized my calling as a birth doula. I am truly humbled and honored to use my voice, my hands, and my heart to inspire women and their families as they bring their babies into the world. I believe every woman deserves a doula and I welcome the opportunity to facilitate that.
Description of services offered: labor and birth doula, breastfeeding basics, postpartum support, positive parenting solutions
Trainings/Certification: Birth Arts International (2017), Rebozo Training (2017), M.Ed in Secondary Education (2012), BA in English (2009)
Areas/hospitals served: All hospitals in the greater Charlotte area. Birth centers: Baby+Co and Natural Beginnings. Planned home births with midwife present.
Short bio: I'm a trained birth doula who found myself immersed in birth community during my first pregnancy and birth in 2012 - and jumped in with both feet. We welcomed our second child in 2014 and both births were such a positive experience that I want that for all parents - supported, in control, and informed. I don't believe in the rather common “It’s just one day, you can get through it” attitude – every parent I've met has strong feelings around their birth experience and the memories last a lifetime. I feel that education and one-on-one support are absolutely the best thing parents need during their transition into parenthood.
Services offered: Labor and birth doula, one-on-one and small group childbirth education, placenta encapsulation, and belly casting
Trainings/Certifications: Dar la Luz Birth Doula 2012, Babywearing Intl Volunteer Babywearing Educator 2014, CPR and NRP certified biennially
Areas/hospitals served: Hospital, home, or birth center in the Greater Charlotte area, Huntersville, and SC
Bio: I have an amazingly supportive husband and together we have 5 awesome children as well as 3 beautiful, amazing grandchildren (with hope for more to come). I have been supporting women and families during pregnancy, birth and early parenting for more than 27 years. My first birth experience was so empowering that I soon became addicted to all things pertaining to birth. I began attending the births of family and friends at every opportunity. I have many years' experience as a health educator in public health, providing in-home pregnancy and parenting education as well as labor support. I have been a doula since before I knew what a doula was! I believe with all of my heart that this is God’s calling for my life!
I believe that birth is a sacred event and that a woman has an inner wisdom that guides her through her birth. I passionately believe in a woman’s innate, God given ability to birth her baby! I believe a woman has the right as well as the responsibility to make healthy, informed choices for herself; her pregnancy and her baby, to birth where and how she chooses and to have people around her that fully support these choices. I strongly believe in the importance of wondrous, joyful birth memories! I believe that a positive birth experience will empower new parents in all areas of their lives!

Postpartum doula info:
When I gave birth to my first 3 children my husband and mother both worked full time and they were unable to provide as much help as I would have liked. My mother was able to come and stay with me for a few days after my 4th child was born and I was able to spend memorable time getting to know my newborn as well as introducing her to her big sister and brothers in a calm, relaxing way without worrying about what I was going to feed them for lunch or when I would have time to do the laundry. I felt like a queen! Twenty six years later, I still have such positive memories of that time. I also spent many years providing prenatal and postpartum support and education on a full time basis in a public health setting. I have had much training in all things postpartum including breastfeeding, postpartum emotions, newborn care and early parenting. I am a true believer in the concept of mothering the mother.
Parenting is an amazing and yes, let's be honest, some days exhausting journey! In days gone by, new parents were surrounded by family, friends and neighbors helping out in numerous ways. These days, with some families living quite a distance from each other and everyone having such busy lives, new parents are often left on their own. Although this is a wonderful time for family bonding and getting to know your new baby, an extra pair of hands can be invaluable! Not having to worry about household tasks and having someone knowledgeable and supportive available when needed will allow new parents to concentrate on the more important tasks like getting to know their newborns, as well as getting much needed rest!
Services: tailored to fit needs of family including light housework, light meal preparation, running errands, caring for siblings, breastfeeding education, support and resources, postpartum emotional support and resources. Basic infant care education available if needed (diapering, bathing, etc.)

Bio: When my parents raised me to follow my dreams, I did so quite literally. Since
childhood I have had a keen interest in all things maternal, frequently dreaming of
pregnancy and birth. After college, I made a list of all the things that I wanted to see and
do in my life. Staring back at me from my bucket list was “be with a woman while she
gives birth.” I realized that dream in 2005, facilitating the birth experience of my dear
friends’ first child. The ecstatic moment of their son’s first breath convinced me of my
calling to be a Doula. I was a Doula for 9 years before becoming a mom myself and my own
birth completed the circle for me of divine birthing. I have two boys and each birth was
very different. I would love to share my birth stories with you. I love chai lattes, flip flops,
long hair, playing and coaching soccer, long runs when it is not too hot or too cold,
camping and bonfires, poetry, dancing, smiling, playing with my dogs, positive energy,
sushi, recycling, waterfalls, writing in my journal, hot yoga, talking, massaging, throwing
pottery, giving every piece of my time and energy that I have to spare away, serving God
and loving people.
Philosophy: Congratulations on your pregnancy!!! The first thing you need to know is that
I am all about you and your baby. My birth philosophy is to help you have the best possible
birth as YOU define it. As you embrace your pregnancy and eagerly await the arrival of
your baby you are going to feel many emotions and have many visions about what will
happen during your birth. I want your birth story to be peaceful, happy and a memory that
you will love to share for years to come. I will help take away the fear of childbirth and
work with you to channel your thoughts, energy and strength into a peaceful beginning
for your baby. I am here to be your voice for advocating to your partner, family, nursing
staff, hospital and anyone else about your opinions and preferences for your birth. I am
here to educate you and your partner. Throughout your birth process I will take on Your
vision and Your goals for your birth as my own and help you live them out. I will provide
you with continuous support from the earliest signs of labor until your beautiful baby is
wrapped safely in your arms. I will stay by your side until the baby is born, helping you in
all the ways that you define you need support. In all the ways you need support that you
are unaware of now, I will just be there understanding and comforting you all the way
through the birth. Women helping women give birth is an ancient practice that still
continues today and I would love to be your Doula. More detailed services are found on my

Name: Carrie Siftar
Short bio: I've always had a passion for childbirth but it wasn't until delivering my son in 2016 that I decided to pursue it as a career. My goal as a doula is to provide women with a birthing experience of their own design. I seek a holistic approach, recognizing that maternity care goes well beyond the womb and extends towards educational, emotional, physical, and spiritual support. I don't want to simply check in on my clients occasionally, but rather, I will be praying for them often, as well as sending along any resources I believe may be beneficial. I also offer birth photography and will gladly manage both the roles of doula and photographer at my clients' births.
I'm a mama of just one child right now, but my husband and I hope we'll be blessed with lots of kiddos in the future. We transferred to Charlotte 7 years ago from Ohio, worked together in education for 5 years, and would love to call the Carolinas home for the rest of our lives.
I believe every person on this Earth is given a divine story, crafted especially for them by God. That is why I love birth so much-- you get to watch the beginning of an eternal story that was written before the world began. There's nothing more amazing! It would be an honor to journey alongside you as your child's story combines with yours in real life.

My name is Helen Herzig, and I am the Aussie Doula. I am a wife and mum of 5 busy and beautiful kids from 8 through 19. I had them all naturally in both home and hospital settings. I am from Australia (and yes,I still do have an Aussie accent) , but now call Charlotte home. I attended my first birth 20 years ago and have always been the go to source for all things birth and parenting from my friends. This calming demeanor and positive presence has been a virtue in my natural progression into becoming a certified Doula 6 years ago.
I have attended over 175 births and growing! I am also a placenta encapsulation specialist as well as a postpartum doula. I have attended many workshops and trainings as I feel ongoing education is vital to keep fresh in the birth world. I also mentor newer doulas and have a monthly mothers meetup at Baby and Company for my birth families. We have continuing education and many new friendships are made. My philosophy is a stranger is just a friend I haven't met yet.
I truly love what I do and I love to see the relationships grow as maidens become mothers. I would sincerely love to serve you in this incredible path to parenthood and look forward to getting to know you more. Lets have a wonderful birth together!

My labor doula training was completed in April of 2015. Currently I am working on my certification with CAPPA. My interest in birth began when I started my journey into motherhood. With the birth of each of my children I realized the need every laboring mother has for a strong and empowering support system. Having experienced the difference betweeen medicated and unmedicated labors, I am looking forward to supporting you during this special and exciting time of your life.

Bio: I am a wife to an amazing husband and mother of two precious children. I am a former elementary teacher and fluent in Spanish. My desire to become a doula began after having my two children and realizing the importance of having a birth team that supports the woman and her birthing options. Birth is a beautiful and unique experience and so often the opposite is portrayed leaving fear and self-doubt. I believe in the strength of women to birth! As a doula my goal is to support women in reaching their ideal birth as best as possible and feeling the sense of empowerment through an amazing birth experience!

Hello! My name is Fametta Darling and I come to this work after years in more academic shoes. My background is in Project Management, but after experiencing the birth of my son, I knew that my real passion was the hands-on work of serving birthing families as a holistic doula and childbirth educator. As a doula and birth worker, I offer holistic care for your pregnancy, birth and postpartum period; physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional elements are upheld and given space during this transformative time, to ensure a positive and empowering birth experience.
I believe that the process of human childbirth is a normal physiological process perfectly designed by nature to bring babies into the world. It is an instinctive, primal experience that has its own rhythm and pace which should be respected and honored. Women should have as much control as possible in determining their care, and should be encouraged to be active participants in decision-making and self-care. When informed, supported and encouraged to follow their own instincts, women can be active givers of birth rather than passive receivers of birth technology. Childbirth, when experienced in this way, has the potential to be a transformative event; women who take responsibility for their births and give birth to their babies under their own power, emerge from the experience empowered, with a new sense of their own capabilities. My philosophy emphasizes personalized care for each mother’s unique labor and delivery. It is my goal to help foster confidence in the mother and her ability to give birth.
I am also a proud and constant ally of the LGBTQA - identifying members of the birthing community.

Name: Carole Pickard
I have been a birth and postpartum doula for years before it had a name! I began almost 37 years ago in 1982 by assisting friends, family, and La Leche League moms with the birth support and postpartum care for mothers and newborn infants. My family moved here this past October from the WNC mountains of Brevard to be closer to family. We have six children, ages 13 to 38, and six grandchildren, ages six and under. I'm homeschooling our youngest.
When I had my first baby in 1980, I had not been around many babies before, and quite frankly, really didn't know what I was doing. He arrived nine days after I turned 20 years old and eight days past his due date. Going into the hospital, I knew I wanted as little intervention as possible, but I had no idea how to ask for it. In those days, enemas, shaving, and episiotomies were considered the norm, and not even Lamaze prepared me for an excruciatingly painful back labor. They whisked my nine-pound newborn son away so quickly that I barely had time to glance at him, let alone bond with those first precious minutes of skin-to-skin contact!
Fortunately, breastfeeding wasn't too big of an obstacle for me, as I discovered La Leche League and started attending meetings when my baby was very young. Once I became a La Leche Leader in 1982 and baby number two was on the way, I knew I wanted a natural childbirth this time. The Carolina Birthing Center, a free-standing, out-of-hospital, birthing center in High Point, NC was just getting ready to open. I made an appointment to meet with the midwife, Elizabeth (Libby) Dickson, CNM, and was so excited about having our baby there! She was the epitome of what I think a midwife or doula should be: a good listener, cheerleader, caregiver, supporter, teacher, trustworthy, and friend. This time I chose the Bradley method of childbirth, and right away new it was a good fit for me. Our daughter, arriving in 1983 at 9 lbs. 3 oz. was one of the first births at the birthing center.
Although there were minimal interventions with this birth, I still had the midwife strip my membranes due to slow labor progression (7 cm for HOURS), and did require an episiotomy. Home six hours later, we were now a family of four. When our older two children were 7 and almost 5, my husband at the time and I decided to have a third child. Funny how people think that since "you have one of each, why would you want another?" On May 25, 1988, we welcomed another son into our growing family. Arriving a 9 lbs. 6 oz., his arrival was my perfect birth experience. I recently had his birth transferred from VHS to DVD, and now use the video of his birth to teach a childbirth class for my clients as well as for siblings at birth. His birth was everything I had hoped for, even after having two car accidents (neither one my fault) during my pregnancy with him!
The years passed, and they truly do so in the blink of an eye. The father of my first three children and I divorced in 1993, and I went from being a full time homemaker to a single working mother of three children, ages 4, 9, and 12. Eventually, I met my current husband on a dating website in 2001. We married a year later, and after suffering a miscarriage in 2004, I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl in 2005, just shy of turning 45 years old! Having 18 years between my youngest and this newborn was quite a spread, and one of the reasons I call myself the "seasoned" doula. I didn't think of myself as an "old" mom when she arrived; I just considered myself "seasoned" by years of experience.
Our baby was an unplanned cesarean section due to her size at 10 lbs. 6 oz., and there was concern regarding the circumference of her abdomen and possibility of a shoulder dystocia. I also did not do my due diligence and check to see what the cesarean section rate for this hospital was, which I later discovered that it was extremely high at 68%. In my defense, I thought that the natural childbirth phenomenon from the 1980's had continued. Furthermore, my husband had started a new job in South Carolina, and we had only lived in the area for a mere six weeks before her arrival. As one can imagine, I was incredibly upset at the outcome of this birth as I had already experienced the ideal, and this was far from it. However, in retrospect this birth has provided me with invaluable recovery and breastfeeding experience in helping another mother through a cesarean section.
Now, here I am so many years later. My oldest daughter, now 35, is the mother of two of my grandchildren and a La Leche League Leader in the Raleigh area. A couple of years ago she asked me, "Mom, have you ever considered becoming a doula? You'd be great, especially for postpartum moms." At 58, I'm a mother and grandmother, wiser with rich experience, and "seasoned" to share my philosophy of "mothering the mother," so that new mothers I work with may be the mother her family needs. I look forward to meeting you!

I have been involved in birth work since 1998, which began with the study of breastfeeding physiology and support. In 2000, I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and worked 3 years as a NICU nurse, before starting my own family.
My husband and I moved to North Carolina in 2005, with our daughter, looking for a peaceful place to raise our family. Since then, 3 more children have joined our family! I have personally had a hospital induced birth and two homebirths. After the birth of my oldest daughter, I began to study birth-related topics in-depth, with a focus on normal, physiological birth while also studying evidence-based research concerning interventions and alternatives. I became a La Leche League Leader and volunteered for 3 years, serving mothers in my community. My doula work naturally followed, beginning in 2006 and grew through word of mouth by satisfied clients!
In 2016 I began formal training as a childbirth educator. I am constantly looking for ways to expand my knowledge to better serve my clients and students. In the fall of 2018 I will attend a Spinning Babies Workshop and a Rebozo Workshop.
I use an interactive approach in teaching. I use a wide array of tools and hands-on techniques with my clients to provide physical, emotional and evidence-based informational support throughout pregnancy, labor, birth and the early postpartum period. Through interaction and open discussion with my clients and students, my doula services and classes are tailored to fit each individual birthing mother's needs as well as those of her family.
The classes I teach are not only extremely informative and in-depth, they are also fun! They include hands-on labor rehearsal practice, relaxation practice as well as interactive and meaningful games that help students apply what they've learned.
I serve families within an hour of Shelby, North Carolina including (but not limited to): Gastonia, Forest City, Charlotte, and Spartanburg and Greenville in South Carolina. I will serve families outside of this area in special situations. I attend hospital births within an hour of Shelby as well as birthing centers in Statesville, Charlotte, Spartanburg and Greenville. I will also attend home births within an hour of Shelby NC.

I’ve been passionate about childbirth for as long as I can remember. As a young girl and later a teenager, I was given the opportunity to attend two of my siblings’ births. I watched my mother — in awe as she exhibited such strength and grace during the birthing process. I knew from then on that I would never get enough of witnessing and playing a small part in the beautiful miracle of new life as it enters this world. I am now married and have three precious children of my own. My oldest son was born with a severe congenital heart defect. Only half of his heart developed correctly, so he arrived fighting for his life and immediately needed the first of three open-heart surgeries in order to survive. After having two more surgeries before the age of three, he is now stable and doing remarkably well. My second pregnancy held another unique set of surprises as we soon discovered we would be having not one baby, but twins — a boy and a girl — to welcome into our family. With one medically fragile child, as well as twins to chase around, it has certainly been a wild, but fun, ride. When I’m not attending a birth or spending time with my crazy kiddos, I enjoy cooking, reading, and making special memories with my family.
As the first born in a family of six children – and now having three of my own – “mothering” has always come naturally to me. It is this strong instinct to nurture, meet both physical and emotional needs, and tend to the comfort of those under my care. I believe every birthing woman should be supported in this way. As a doula, my most important job is to “mother the mother.” While the birthing mother and her partner focus on the important work of bringing a new life into this world, a doula will keep her focus on the mother’s needs, desires, and emotional well-being. I believe the birth of your child is one of the most significant moments in your life. It is my goal to help that experience be as smooth and positive as it can possibly be – helping to preserve your birth as a memory you can treasure forever.
